In Paris, the National Archives has preserved a large number of the entries submitted in the annual fugue contest for advanced students at the Paris Conservatory. Many of the great names of French classical music can be found among the winners—composers, performers, and future professors. One or more students could be awarded a 1st prize, a 2nd prize, or a level of honorable mention. No contest was held in 1871 due to war and revolution.
